Quick Challenge Answer: Why Doesn’t God Heal Amputees?

Why Doesn't God Heal Amputees?

This week’s quick challenge answer is to the question “Why Doesn’t God Heal Amputees”?

The first question I would pose to someone that raises this objection is “How do you know God doesn’t heal amputees?” It’s not at all clear to me that this is the case. Think about it for just a minute.  To make this claim, one would have to have researched every amputee ever to have existed. They would then have to show conclusively that none of them had been healed.  That is just not possible.

Furthermore, there are several credible accounts of amputees actually being healed. J.P. Moreland tells of such an experience he personally witnessed.  Craig Keener, in his 2-volume book called simply Miracles, lists several accounts as well.

I think what lays behind this challenge is a desire for a “unequivocal miracle”. One that cannot be explained by anything other than divine intervention. But I doubt even the healing they are requesting would be enough to convince some die hard skeptics. Even if it turned out there was no other explanation for the healing, a skeptic could still challenge the miracle. They could just say that the limb grew back because of some hidden genetic coding from early in our evolution. If someone is determined not to believe in God, nothing but the intervention of the Holy Spirit is going to change their mind.
