The title “Mother of God” (Theotokos in Greek) is one of the oldest and most well-known Christian and Catholic dogmas. This dogma has been affirmed by councils and churches throughout the centuries and is held by Christians of all denominations. So what does it mean to say that Mary is the Mother of God?
Christians And Catholics Agree
To put it simply, the Mother of God dogma means that Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, who is both fully human and fully divine. This doesn’t mean that Mary is a goddess; rather, it affirms her role in the incarnation of Christ. The doctrine of the incarnation teaches that Jesus was born as a human being, but that he was also fully divine. In other words, he was both God and man.
This might sound like a contradiction, but it’s actually an essential part of Christian theology. Christians believe that Jesus is the only way to know God; he is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). For this reason, Jesus had to be both human and divine in order to be our savior. If he were just a man, he would be limited in his knowledge and ability to save us from our sin. But if he were just God, he wouldn’t be able to truly understand our human experience. As C.S. Lewis once said, “He can no more understand what we go through than we can understand what it feels like to be a meter stick.”
The Mother of God doctrine affirms Mary’s important role in this mystery. Without her “yes” to God’s plan, we would not have our Savior. She is therefore given a special place of honor in Christianity and is venerated as the Theotokos, or “Mother of God.”
Conclusion:
The Mother of God dogma is one of the oldest and most well-known Christian dogmas. It affirms that Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, who is both fully human and fully divine. This doctrine is essential to our understanding of who Jesus is and why he came into the world. Without Mary’s obedience to God’s will, we would not have our Savior. For this reason, she holds a special place in Christian theology and devotion.
