Quick Challenge Answer: Does The Multiverse Explain Fine Tuning?

What Is The Mark Of The Beast?

Does the multiverse explain fine tuning? One of the many arguments used to show the existence of God is the fine tuning of the universe to support life on earth.  There are many universal constants that if they were just slightly off, would render life on Earth impossible.

How Do We Explain This?

While theists claim these extraordinarily precise constants point to a designer, naturalists remain unconvinced.  Maybe we just got lucky.  Obviously since we exist, the constants are there, but they exist purely by accident. There was no planning or design involved.

But within the last 20 years or so, another explanation has been postulated.  What if we are just one of many universes?  What if we just happen to be in the one universe out of billions that will support life?  Then the constants seem put here less by design, and more by chance.  But does the theory do what the naturalists hope it will?

The Multiverse Hypothesis?

For the sake of argument, let’s just go ahead and assume that there are in fact multiple universes.  But we do need to keep in mind that at the present time, there is limited evidence to suggest such a thing actually exists.  It is just a theory.  And we shouldn’t draw too many conclusions from the evidence we have.

The first question I think everyone has is, what exactly is creating these universes?  As we have pointed out before, everything that begins to exist has a cause.  So what’s causing the creation of these universes?  Whatever it is must be spaceless, timeless, immaterial and intelligent.

More Or Less Likely?

Far from making life on Earth more likely, the multiverse theory seems to do the exact opposite. The fact that life permitting factors exist Earth is remarkable.  Remarkably rare.  Adding additional universes doesn’t reduce the odds that life would exist, it makes them much greater.  In other words, life is scarcer on the multiverse theory than with the single universe model.

One final note.  One of the many objections to God has been “Why is there so much wasted space?”.  Why did God need this much room to permit life on Earth?  But after complaining that there is so much wasted space, the naturalist immediately comes up with a theory that creates even more space.  More purposeless suns, planets, black holes and yes, space.

So with the limited evidence for the multiverse, and little in the way of explanatory power, the multiverse is not a better explanation for life on Earth.
