There is a commonly held belief among some other faith groups that Mark 13:32 proves Jesus was not God. This verse reads, “But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” But this interpretation is deeply flawed and overlooks important facts and context. Let’s explore why.
The Logical Fallacy of Argument from Ignorance
The logical fallacy of argument from ignorance states that something must be true because it has yet to be proven false. The idea behind this interpretation of Mark 13:32 is that since Jesus did not know when “that day or hour” would come, he must not be God. But this logic ignores two important facts. First of all, as God incarnate, Jesus voluntarily restricted his divine knowledge while on Earth (Philippians 2:6–7). He chose to limit himself so as to better understand what it meant to be human. Second, even if Jesus had full access to his divine knowledge while living on Earth, that still would not prove he was not God—it simply means he chose not to exercise his knowledge in certain situations. In other words, just because Jesus didn’t reveal something doesn’t mean he couldn’t have revealed it had he chosen to do so.
Other Passages That Prove Jesus Was God
Other passages in the Bible prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus was indeed God incarnate. Consider John 8:58 wherein Jesus proclaims himself to be “I am”—a direct reference to Exodus 3:14 wherein Yahweh reveals himself by saying “I am who I am.” Also consider Hebrews 1:3 which says “He [Jesus] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature…” This verse makes it clear that whatever attributes are true about Yahweh are also true about Jesus—and vice versa! Finally, consider Colossians 2 which tells us that in Christ “the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily”. In other words, all of Yahweh’s divine attributes were present in Christ as he walked here on Earth during his time as man. These verses make it crystal clear that we can confidently believe and declare that yes, Jesus was indeed God incarnate!
Conclusion:
Mark 13:32 does not prove or disprove whether Jesus was God; rather it reveals an intentional limitation imposed by him while living here on Earth as man. Other passages throughout Scripture attest to and affirm with certainty that Yeshua (Jesus) was indeed both fully human and fully divine at once—God incarnate! So rest assured knowing you can confidently believe in and declare without hesitation your faith in this foundational truth about our Lord and Savior!
