Back to Basics: Why Study Apologetics?

How do I explain why apologetics is essential to someone unfamiliar with the subject? Why am I so hyper-focused on this one area of Christian teaching, rather than others? It made me realize that it is a good idea to occasionally zoom out and go back to the basics.
