Quick Challenge Answer: Can Christians Be Demon-Possessed?

Will God Give You More Than You Can Handle?

Can Christians be demon-possessed?  The Christian worldview by nature is a supernatural worldview.  We believe in supernatural beings.  God, angels, and yes, even demons, are all taught in Scripture.  Demons are mentioned in both the New and the Old Testaments. And demon possession is also clearly described as well.

We see many instances of demon possession in the New Testament.  Jesus removes demons from several people.  Here are just a few examples:

For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” Then He asked him, “What is your name?”

And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.[1]

14 hAnd He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled.[2]

What About Christians?

But in all the cases of Demon possession we see in the Bible, Christ-followers are never mentioned as having been demon-possessed.  This is because Christians already have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them.  Demons are not able to dwell in a body already possessed by the Holy Spirit.

Some people mistakenly say that there is “no room” for a demon in a Christian due to the presence of the Holy Spirit.  This is not quite right. It makes it sound like there is no physical space for a demon to occupy in a Christian.

But we are talking about spiritual forces.  They do not have a physical mass.  The issue is not that there is no room for a demon, but that the presence of the Holy Spirit drives away demons by its presence.

Is There Anything To Worry About Then?

While Christians cannot be possessed by demons, they can be influenced by demons.  We can give in to temptations or be talked into making bad decisions.  And this is where Christians need to be on guard.

C.S. Lewis had this to say on people’s attitudes towards demons:

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.” C.S. Lewis- The Screwtape Letters

And this is where we should be on guard.  Taking an unhealthy interest in demons can lead to their having an influence on our lives.  And it can lead to making decisions that go against God and Scripture.

The second warning is not to ignore their existence altogether either.  Just because we cannot be possessed as Christians does not mean we are in the clear.  Those around us can be demon-possessed.  And we can fall under their influence if we are not alert to the danger.

Final Verdict

So, can Christians be possessed by demons?  The answer is no, they can’t.  Christians may be influenced by demonic forces, but they cannot be possessed by demons.  Only those not under the protection of the Holy Spirit may be possessed.
